Alignment Question

Last weekend while replacing the pads and rotors on our Envoy, I discovered that the passenger side outer tie rod end was shot. I ordered new ones for both sides and I’m going to install them tonight.

I know it’s important to have the jam nut in as close to the same position on the new one so the alignment is as preserved as possible, but is it that critical that they’re in exactly the same position if I’m going straight to the shop tomorrow morning to have an alignment done?

get it as close as possible as you’ve planned. if the shop is close by you’re not going to feather the tire(s) much if at all over such a short trip. people do this all the time.

If it’s getting aligned anyway, not really. If it’s too far out it could make driving it a chore and chew the tires up quick, so you still want to get it somewhat close.

If you’re going to get the car aligned asap, just make sure they’re kinda close. If the distance isn’t that far there should be next to zero unusual tire wear.

No big deal man, just eye ball it as close you can if your going to straight to the shop.

Couldn’t help but notice the plate, because I’ll be in Des Moines in June. I’m so excited for the corn.

I have had luck with paint pens and counting threads.

Come for the corn, stay for the meth.

Well when I was in Iowa last year, I stayed in Ottumwa. Upside: I managed to survive. Downside: Someone tried to sell me meth at Taco John’s.

If the latter isn’t the most Iowa sentence...

Thankfully you’ll find much more to do in DM than Taco Johns and Meth.

That’s weird. I can still see it in my notifications, but when I click on it I get nothing.

Not a big deal. Get it close and don’t sweat it. If you really want to get picky, you can check your toe with a couple of tape measures and some string. But if you’re just going to take it right to the shop, I wouldn’t even bother.

Yeah you still want to get it as close as you can and drive it straight to the alignment shop

That’s a great idea so long as the new and old parts are the same.... which they often aren’t.

you can set toe pretty reliably by taking measurements on the front and back side of the tires and making sure the number is the same or very close (this won’t however guarantee that the steering wheel is straight, that’s a whole other game).

Last time I did it that way I took it to an alignment shop and it was perfect! (I’m saying you shouldn’t get an alignment afterwards asap)

New and old are identical in this case.

My local Goodyear offers free alignment checks. If I get my new parts aligned as close as possible, there’s a chance that when I get it checked, it might actually be within spec, and I won’t have to pay anything. This could save you some cash if your shop does the same.

True, but I did enjoy the six pack and a pound a Taco John’s, that was the bomb. Oh, and Casey’s General Store pizza was dang fine.

When you’re in DM, find a Jethro’s BBQ and eat there. Fantastic stuff.
